Cross Stitch Fabric Calculator: Plan Your Project
Starting a new cross stitch project is exciting, but cutting the fabric wrong can lead to heartbreak. Whether you are using Aida, Linen, or Evenweave, ensuring you have enough cloth for the design—plus plenty of room for framing—is the first step to success. Our Cross Stitch Calculator does the math for you.
Understanding Fabric Count
The "Count" of a fabric refers to how many stitches fit in one linear inch.
- 14 Count (Most Common): 14 stitches per inch. Produces a nice, visible stitch.
- 18 Count: 18 stitches per inch. Finer detail, smaller design.
- 28 Count (Usually stitched over 2): Used often for linen.
The higher the count, the smaller the final design will be. For example, a 100-stitch wide design on 14-count fabric is ~7.1 inches wide. On 18-count fabric, that same design is only ~5.5 inches wide.
The Importance of Margins
Never cut your fabric to the exact size of the pattern! You need extra space for:
- The Hoop/Q-Snap: You need fabric to grip while stitching.
- Finishing: If you plan to frame it, the framer needs at least 2-3 inches on each side to stretch the fabric over the mounting board.
- Fraying: Fabric edges tend to unravel as you work.
This calculator automatically adds a standard **4-inch total buffer** (2 inches per side) to the final dimensions to ensure you are safe.
How to Use
Look at your pattern chart to find the stitch dimensions (e.g., 150w x 200h). Enter those numbers and your fabric count into the tool. It will tell you the minimum piece of fabric you should buy.
Conclusion
Measure twice, cut once! Use the Cross Stitch Fabric Calculator to buy the right amount of material and frame your masterpiece with confidence.
